Tongariro - Lord of the Rings

The home to the Dark Lord Sauron was shot on location on and around the rocky slopes of the Tongariro National Park. The area's jagged volcanic rock formations and eerie barren landscapes were ideal location for creating Mordor's hissing wasteland. The beautiful Mt Ngauruhoe was digitally transformed to create the fiery Mt Doom.  Filming Location maps are available at Adventure Lodge. Special care was taken during filming to protect the sensitive ecological environment

Tongariro - Mountain Biking

Explore the inspiring and challenging landscape in and around National Park Village on bike. We know you'll be exhilarated by the varied landscapes and typography discovered on the many trails. Two of the seven trails which are part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project are found in the region; Central North Island Rail Trail (The Timber Trail) and Mountains to Sea Trails. Tongariro - River Rafting

The waters of the Tongariro River provide one of nature's finest, fun-filled roller coaster rides. Imagine rafting grade three rapids and long, lumpy glides through pristine pools and breathtaking gorges. Tongariro - Scenic Flights

The scenic flight over the Tongariro National Park is a volcanic and thermal voyage around three spectacular volcanoes. Lava flows,

Tongariro -Trout Fishing

The Tongariro and the surrounding areas boast world-class wilderness fishing offering angling of all types, from Trophy lake fishing (Otamangakau 20 min east of National Park Village) to the ever challenging wilderness backcountry head waters. You can choose between sight fishing for large trout in streams almost small enough to jump over, to targeting the evening rise on large boulder strewn rivers.

Mt Ruapehu - Skiing and Snowboarding

Within the 600 acre boundary, there are a myriad of options that cater for beginners right through to advanced skiers out to challenge their limits. There are plenty of marked trails but the off piste skiing at Whakapapa is superb. More information
